1 After the Industrial Revolution societies were based on Industrialism, which looked like this:
Before the Industrial Revolution, societies were based on these things…

2 This cartoon is showing the USA and Russia, but what is the point?
Imperialism Take your time with this picture, read the labels, think about what it might mean for the tentacles to be touching those other lands… **What is the goal of all this control? Remember this? What did we say the red represented?

3 Scramble for Africa Who is scrambling? Why? What for?

4 Social Darwinism/ White Man’s Burden
The phrase “Survival of the fittest” comes from this idea… Social Darwinism/ White Man’s Burden Animals? Businesses? People? This was another “reason” to go to Africa… Social Darwinism justified the extreme gaps between the rich and the poor, whites and non-whites, and also led to the development of the White Man’s Burden. (Remember that?) 

5 Opium Wars Background:
Britain wants tea from China, but China isn’t really interested in trading with Europeans… So, Britain starts ILLEGALLY trading opium to groups in China Opium: a HIGHLY addictive drug found today in Heroin and prescription pain killers. Addiction grows, the Chinese government grows angry and destroys opium creating violence between the British and Chinese.

6 Nationalism A deep, extreme, overwhelming pride in one’s country. It has positive and negative possibilities.

7 Economic systems: How the people and government earn money, do business.
Capitalism Communism Individuals work at jobs and companies owned privately. (Owned by an owner, or themselves.) The owner pays them based on what he/she thinks is fair. The government is rarely involved. (But can employ people, like police and teachers) If you want to succeed you must work harder. Survival of the fittest. Results in rich, poor, and in-between. Cow Analogy: You have two cows, you sell one and buy a bull to create a herd of cattle. Individuals work at jobs and companies, but the are ALL owned by the government. The government pays them equally. The government has total control over prices, goods, salaries, in the name of equality. Harder work does not guarantee becoming rich. Cow Analogy: You have two cows, the government takes them and gives you milk. What are the problems/benefits of each system?

8 Karl Marx (1800s) Was upset with what was happening with industrialization and imperialism. Saw child labor, the rich growing richer, the poor growing poorer, and the unfair treatment of the larger low class. He wrote several books, outlining new ideas on economics (business) and developing what later became Communism. He is considered the father of this ideology.
