William Howard Taft 27th President of the United States – Republican Becomes President after Roosevelt serves two terms Taft supported the Payne-Aldrich Act which unexpectedly continued high tariff rates and went against the ideals of most progressives. Taft supported over 80 lawsuits to end monopolies. Taft fought for the creation of a federal income tax and direct election of Senators. Many Progressive Party members felt that Taft wasn’t supporting their agenda and caused a rift in the Republican Party for the election of Taft’s presidency was entangled in controversy and conflict with Congress. Many like TR would abandon Taft.
