-note that only NAD is produced to be used again in glycolysis
-occurs in animals; lactic acid is toxic

-in another process, alcohol, CO2, and NAD are the product
-the NAD is used to continue glycolysis
-occurs in bacteria and yeast; alcohol is toxic
