4 How did the Stamp Act lead to the American Revolution?
Great Britain took on enormous debt to pay for the French and Indian War. Great Britain passed this debt to colonists in the form of taxes, particularly the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act required all colonists to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used—even playing cards! The actual cost of the Stamp Act was relatively small. What made the law so offensive to the colonists is the standard it seemed to set. The Stamp Act was seen as a direct attempt by England to raise money in the colonies without the approval of the colonial legislatures. The colonists were worried that, if this new tax were allowed to pass without resistance, the door would be open for more troublesome taxation in the future.
