Progressives sought reform and to fix the problems created by industrialism and urbanization.
Warm Up: Think for a minute about the Gilded Age (the last era we studied) What problems do you remember that existed because of Immigration, Urbanization, and Industrialization?

Many problems can be grouped together into categories. You and your group members will explore these issues through primary sources.

4. Group Activity
In each folder are 11 different primary sources. It is your task place them in groups. Which sources have things in common?
Once you have them grouped, you will list them on your handout and begin filling in the evidence (what do you see in the picture?)
Then, form a definition of the problem by summarizing what you see.

Proponents of Prohibition included many women reformers, who were concerned about alcohol's link to wife beating and child abuse, and industrialists, such as Henry Ford, who were concerned about the impact of drinking on labor productivity. Advocates of Prohibition argued that outlawing drinking would eliminate corruption, end machine politics, and help Americanize immigrants.
