(A) Schematic of known synaptic connections between CSF-cNs, V0-vs and motoneurons (MNs). CSF-cNs (orange) provide GABAergic inputs to V0-vs (dark green) which in turn synapse directly with MNs (light green). The MNs ultimately project into the periphery and innervate the surrounding musculature. (B) Upper panel: schematic of experimental setup. The authors used transgenic fish that express channelrhodopsin in CSF-cNs to selectively activate this cell population (via illumination with blue light). Effects on fictive locomotor output were monitored with ventral root recordings. Middle panel: stimulating CSF-cNs with blue light (blue bars) during periods of rest was sufficient to elicit bouts of fictive locomotion. Lower panel: when blue light was applied just after onset of naturally-occurring fictive locomotion, motor episodes were terminated prematurely.
