2 Purpose of Lang & Id For this topic we are concerned with how an individual identity is constructed through language Besides the human desire to belong to a community, exists the desire to be a unique individual.

3 You can think of this image of these shoes as a kind of metaphor for understanding how language sets one apart from the rest. How people use language to express their uniqueness in a similar way?

4 Relevant Questions How is language used to construct one's identity?
How do people use one or more languages in various contexts to express their individual identity? How do individuals define themselves according to the practices of a community?

5 Cultural Sensitivity As we analyze how audience and purpose affect the structure and content of texts we come to realize the importance of culture. No one understands this better than advertisers, who construct different texts for different audiences. While reviewing the following ads, how does your own cultural bias create awareness for how cultural values shape our interpretation of texts?

6 Cultural Sensitivity McDonald Ads Across the Globe:
Multinational corporations, such as Ikea, Starbuck or McDonald’s are faced with the challenge of selling the same products worldwide, be it furniture, coffee or hamburgers.

7 Decontextualization understand the importance of the terms 'audience' and 'purpose', we need to ask ourselves: 'What do we know about the context in which a particular text was written?' Often, we look for contextual clues, such as the title of a work, the name of its author and the year of publication.

8 Decontextualization These bits of information carry a lot of meaning and help us interpret texts. In this lesson you will come to understand their importance, as you look at a text out of context and make educated guesses about the context. You will come to realize that we often project our understanding of the world onto texts in order to make them meaningful.
