11 © NOKIA 1999 MMSdescr.PPT/ 03.08.1999 / TL MMS, terminal issues Co-existence with SMS is evident, and therefore the commonality need to be maximised in the UI (same "look and feel") MMS customer base should be as large as possible, however MMS should be optional service for terminals in the beginning Up to terminal capabilities, whether it is able to handle small or large set of content types (JPEG, GIF, MP3, MPEG4, …)

12 © NOKIA 1999 MMSdescr.PPT/ 03.08.1999 / TL MMS Content Formats A minimum set of content formats needed for "MMS capable" terminals to communicate with each other, to ensure message delivery Minimum set could be e.g.: JPEG images GIF images Text (different char sets) A message will be combined using Multipart MIME with the use of SMIL for syncronisation of modules Part of WAP specification e.g. WAP 2.0

13 © NOKIA 1999 MMSdescr.PPT/ 03.08.1999 / TL MMS complements Email MMS as a service is already existing Familiar concept from SMS, used for instant messaging between users ("Almost real-time") Suitable for mobile terminal usage Charging per message No need to remember the messages ("Store and forward") Email as a service is already existing Used for offline communication, not time critical information for consumer users Suitable for desktop PC usage Charging per email not applicable, therefore mainly per traffic charging, which is difficult to sell to users Requires mailbox management, users have already mailboxes and email accounts (ISP, company, …)
