- Face saving potlatches -took place after public indignity involving person of high rank. (Ex: tripped\fell, was shown to inferior seat, etc.) - small gift\brief speech helped restore dignity - if insulted/ill will bigger potlatch happened - Rescue and ransom potlatches - for tribal members who were freed/recaptured - after period of war amongst other nations - fate of slaves were often decided - some win freedom others face death - Transfer of title potlatches - giving new clan title, crest or high status - includes announcement of origin/how title was acquired
