2. What is the Florida Standards Assessment?
The FSA is an authentic assessment that includes more than just multiple choice questions.
Students will be expected to respond to multiple choice questions, create graphs, write and respond in different ways than on other traditional tests.
The FSA will prepare Florida students for success in college, career, and in life by emphasizing analytical thinking
Emphasizes critical thinking
Measures student mastery of 4th and 5th grade standards
Meets high quality standards for assessment, including reliability and validity for a variety of accountability purposes

4. Achievement Levels
The success a student has achieved with the Florida Standards will be assessed by FSA ELA and Mathematics assessments and is described by Achievement Levels that range from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest).

7. FSA Mathematics Sample questions
Equation Items:
For these items, students will write their response in the box provided. Writing the response is the correct way to enter their answer ONLY for the items that tell them to do this.
Two- Part Equation Items:
Some equation items have two parts. For a two-part equation item, students must be sure to enter their answer for each part of the question.
Open Response Values
The values for the open response questions depend on the nature of the item and what is being asked. Most are one point items, but there could be some that are worth more than one point. If there are any open response items that are worth more than one point, then a student can earn partial credit in increments of one point. For example: if an item were worth two points, then a student may earn two points, one point, or no points.

13. FSA ELA Writing Component
The FSA ELA has a Text-Based Writing Component that is administered separately from the rest of the FSA ELA Assessment.
The FSA Writing score is reported as part of the ELA score.
The scoring is based on a 10 point rubric.
4 points for Purpose, Focus, and Organization
4 points for Evidence and Elaboration
2 points for Conventions
Students will be asked to write an essay in response to either an Informative or Opinion prompt. 4th graders will be presented with 2-3 sources and 5th graders will be presented with 3-4 sources.

The two parts of the item may be either multiple- choice (one correct answer) or multi-select (more than one correct answer), so they have to be sure to read the item carefully to know how many correct answers to choose.

18. What can students do? Tips to do well on the test:
Have materials ready.
Breathe deeply and slowly.
Quickly look over the entire test before starting.
Read the directions CAREFULLY.
Watch the clock and manage your time carefully.
Don’t try to finish first.
Mark difficult questions and come back to them later.
Poof-read answers before time is called.
Find the answer to the question in the passage. Look for the answer in the multiple choice responses.
Make sure your answer is based on information in the passage and not on something your read elsewhere.
Be specific when answering short or extended responses, do not use pronouns.
Understand feelings and emotions.

20. How can I help my child at home?
Ask your child about their school day and visit their teacher’s website on a daily basis
Help infuse what is being learned in class at home
READ with your child at least minutes each day.
Read different types of books and informational text with your child every night.
Ask your child questions about what they read and prompt them to think critically by using text- based evidence
Encourage your child to form and defend an opinion by supporting it with facts, details and reasons from text
Discuss mathematical ideas with your child and have them explain these to you using pictures, graphs, etc.

Ensure your child completes at least two i-Ready math lessons and two i-Ready reading lessons a week.
