Life Science   LS1 Structures and Behaviors

2 Big Idea: Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (LS1)
EALR 4:  Life Science Big Idea: Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (LS1) Core Content:  Structures and Behaviors In prior years, students learned that all plants and animals have life cycles. In grades 4-5 students learn that plants and animals have different structures that work together to respond to various internal and external needs. Students compare various human and animal structures and reflect on how the different structures enable the organism to respond to external and internal needs. Students also learn that healthy body structures depend on good nutrition. These concepts are stepping-stones to later understanding of how structures are built up from cells. Content Standards are located at the top of each slide. Performance Expectation slides for each content standard follow and are located on the bottom of slides highlighted in green.

5 4-5 LS1A : Plants and animals can be sorted according to their structures and behaviors.

7 Birds have many different shaped beaks. Why?
4-5 LS1B Plants and animals have different structures and behaviors that serve different functions. Birds have many different shaped beaks.  Why?

8

9 4-5 LS1C  Certain structures and behaviors enable plants and animals to respond to changes in their environment.

10 Give examples of how plants and animals respond to their environment.
Plants grow towards the light when they are moved to a new location. Most birds can leave an environment easily because they have wings. Give examples of how plants and animals respond to their environment.

11 Many plants grow towards light.

12 Animals hide when they see a predator.

13 4-5 LS1D  Plants and animals have structures and behaviors that respond to internal needs.

14 Plants wilt when they don't have water.

15 Animals seek food when they are hungry.

16 4-5 LS1E Nutrition is essential to health
4-5 LS1E  Nutrition is essential to health. Various kinds of foods are necessary to build and maintain body structures. Individuals have responsibility for their own health and food choices.

17 Various types of food contribute to the maintenance of healthy body structures.

18 You can develop a balanced plan for eating that will allow you to build and maintain your body.
