Density Pre-Lab
2
All things have a density, whether they are a solid, liquid, or gas
It is a ratio comparing the mass of an object to its volume Measured in g/cm3 Density = mass volume Density is a property that can be used for identification purposes
3
Why Do We Care About Density?
Why do some things weigh more than others? Sometimes it is because they are different sizes. For example, a big person weighs more than a small person, but they are both made out of the same stuff inside. On the other hand, some things may weigh more than other things of the same size if they are made out of different stuff. For example, a brick weighs more than a piece of wood of the same size. Density lets us talk about this difference: a big person and a little person have the same density, even though the big person is heavier. A brick and a piece of wood have different densities, even if they are the same size.
4
Determine the density of an object with a mass of 25g and a volume of 30cm3
5
Determine the density of an object with a mass of 230g and a volume of 85cm3
6
Make Some Observations
A liquid will float in a layer on top of a liquid that is more dense than it is. What can you conclude about the sample in front of you?
