What is a model? Scientific models are physical, conceptual, or mathematical representations of real objects, systems, or events Scientific models are used to explain and predict the behavior of real objects or systems. Read “Scientific models are physical…”. Show one example of each type (physical, conceptual, mathematical). We will be using a physical model of the layers of the Earth today. Read “Scientific models are used…” 7 minutes

Modeling the Earth’s Layers
We’ve never been to the center of the Earth. But we have developed models, based on our evidence, of what it looks like. As you explore using an egg as a model of the Earth, I want you to think specifically about what the egg CAN’T show us or tell us about Earth’s layers. 3 minutes

Group Tasks Materials Manager: The Materials Manager’s job is to gather and return all materials needed for the lab. Work-area Manager: Your job is to make sure your group’s work area is clean and tidy. You also need to keep track of time for your group so you can complete tasks in a timely fashion. Question Manager: Your job is to manage any questions the group may have. Raise your hand to ask Mrs. Burke your group’s question. EVERYONE is responsible for reading the directions and following them. Explain Group Tasks: 3 minutes You will have 15 minutes for this activity.

Clean-up Materials Manager: Return the pie plate to the back table.
Work-area Manager: Throw away the coffee filter containing the egg pieces. Make sure your group’s area is clean and tidy. Make sure your group knows how much time is remaining to clean up. Question Manager: Return your group’s science notebooks to the cupboard. Put your group’s Modeling the Earth sheets in the turn in drawer. Everyone: Help move desks back to original spots. Wait in your seats for to be dismissed 5-10 minutes for clean-up
