2 Figure 1 Schematic Showing Major Metabolic Pathways for the Different Substrates That Are Oxidized by Lung Cancer Cells The major metabolic pathways for biomass and energy production in vitro (green) and in vivo (blue). Tumor tissue increases the rate of glucose oxidation compared to normal adjacent tissue (Hensley et al., 2016). In addition to glucose, lactate may also represent an alternative source for pyruvate synthesis. In poorly perfused tumor areas, the relative contribution of glucose carbons to the TCA cycle was found to be higher compared to well-perfused areas (Hensley et al., 2016). Davidson et al. (2016) show that in vitro, but not in vivo, glutamine (Gln) is an important anaplerotic precursor of TCA cycle intermediates for lung cancer cells. Dashed lines represent multistep reactions. Dotted lines highlight minor contribution. Cell Metabolism  , DOI: ( /j.cmet ) Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
