1
Walk-in Submarines and Submersibles are different types of underwater vehicles. What do you think makes them different from one another?
2
Exploring the Oceans
3
Submersibles Researchers use SUBMERSIBLES (small vehicles that can go under water) to explore the ocean and its floor. Submersibles have to withstand very high pressure from the water, and very cold temperatures.
4
Submersibles can be unmanned and remote-controlled, or have humans inside.
They need powerful lights, and a reliable oxygen supply for the researchers. Submarines are larger, often used by the military.
5
Jacques Cousteau French scientist, Jacques Cousteau, invented breathing apparatus to help humans explore oceans at greater depths.
6
What does a submersible do?
Watch this video clip of “Alvin”, a submersible built in 1964 and named after its creator, Allyn Vine. Alvin has made more than 4,700 dives for research!
7
Look at early submersibles…
Click here to view some early ocean contraptions!
8
Design and draw a submersible!
Draw a large, colorful diagram of a submersible YOU would design. Label all the parts listed on the next slide. On the back, write a paragraph describing the FUNCTION of each part of your submersible.
9
Label your submersible’s parts…
Label the parts of it, such as lights, seating areas, viewing windows, moveable arms, oxygen tanks, computer panel for commands cameras and/or video camcorders and other things needed to make it work! Write a paragraph on the back on the FUNCTION OF EACH PART!
