How did the American people see John Adams versus George Washington? Was this fair? Explain:
Some of Adams’ accomplishments include:
Helped write the Declaration of Independence
Ambassador to France and to Great Britain.
He helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolution.
Under Washington, he had served two terms as vice president.
Still, he was looked down on, simply for NOT being Washington himself…

France was still upset about Jay’s Treaty, which they saw as a betrayal by the Americans. In the fall of 1797, Adams sent a delegation to work out peace between the two nations with French Foreign minister Charles de Talleyrand. What happened instead became known as the XYZ affair: VID, Cartoon
People were outraged. More ships were built, Washington came out of retirement to lead the Armed Forces, and the Navy Department was created. French and U.S. ships fought several times, though war was unofficially declared. It was known as the Quasi-war
Peace was declared between the two by 1800, but the Democratic-Republicans suffered some losses in the 1798 elections for their previous support of France as a result.

4. The Alien & Sedition Acts
Fear of France and other foreigners left Americans suspicious of aliens, or foreigners who were not American citizens. This resulted in the 1798 Alien & Sedition Acts (p. 271):
Naturalization Act
Required that aliens be residents for 14 years instead of 5 years before they became eligible for U.S. citizenship.
Alien Acts
Allowed the president to imprison aliens, or send those he considered dangerous out of the country.
Sedition Act
Made it a crime to speak, write, or publish “false, scandalous, and malicious” criticisms of the government.

5. Response to the Acts
Results: Immigration was discouraged; some even left
10 Rep. Editors were arrested for speaking ill of the federal government
People, especially Republicans, were not happy. They felt the acts were an abuse by the federal government, and they called upon state governments to respond. VID
The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 and 1799 did just that, calling the acts unconstitutional, bringing the issue of states’ rights to the forefront.
As a result, the Federalist party suffered. Adams was unwilling to go to war with France to win back American support for the Federalist party, leaving him at odds with Alexander Hamilton and other Federalists. Adams would go on to lose the election to Jefferson, but at least he avoided all-out war.
