Figure 1 Kinetics of Mucosal Inflammation following Salmonella Infection and Subsequent Antibiotic Therapy At homeostasis there is an absence of mucosal inflammation (Ψ0). Infection with the enteric pathogen Salmonella elicits robust production of pro-inflammatory mediators, including IFNγ from NK cells, leading to mucosal inflammation (Ψmax). Ciprofloxacin treatment rapidly reduces bacterial levels in the gut, but mucosal recovery is much slower (Ψ50), due to the unresolved IFNγ production by NK and T cells.
