Explain what causes the Earth to drift apart? Explain.
Semester Week 12 and week 13 ( April 10-14, 2017) Learning Target By the end of class, I will be able to identify and describe the earth’s composition by doing the simulation lab on “Building Pangea” and complete the lab activity worksheet Essential Question Explain what causes the Earth to drift apart? Explain. Agenda Reading Fluency Rate DOF Four-Square Vocabulary Earth’s composition - Pangaea lab Homework Charge your I-pad fully everyday before coming to class Complete all assigned classwork on Canvas

DOF – The Composition of the Earth
The Earth is divided into three layers- the crust, mantle and core. The crust is the outermost layer ranging from 5 to 100 kilometers thick. It is made up of a layer called the lithosphere. The lithosphere (rock sphere)is not a single layer but is made up pieces called tectonic plates. The mantle is the layer of the Earth between the crust and the core. It is about 2,900 km thick and contains most of the Earth’s mass. The layer that makes up the mantle is called the asthenosphere(weak sphere), a soft layer of mantle in which pieces of the lithosphere moves. This layer is made up of solid rock that flows very slowly, like putty and tend to lose their shape when stressed. The mesosphere(middle sphere) is the strong lower part of the mantle. The core extends from the bottom of the mantle to the center of the Earth. It has a diameter of 6,787 km and it’s 33 percent of the Earth’s mass. The core of the Earth is divided into two parts. The outer core is the liquid layer and surrounds the inner core. The inner core is a solid, dense center of our planet.
