Aim: How can we represent really huge and really small numbers?
Homework#1-9: Finish Worksheet Do Now: Fill in chart.
2
What is scientific notation?
Scientific notation is a way of representing really small or really large numbers Who uses scientific notation? Mathematicians, engineers and scientists
3
Homework Review
4
Representing numbers in scientific notation
Rule: Change the number to a number between 1 and 10 by moving the decimal. Then multiply that number by a power of 10 Format: __ • ____ x
5
Scientific Notation Procedure:
Move the decimal to make a number between 1 and 9. Count how many places you moved and multiply by that power of 10. 3. If the number (in standard form) is between zero and one, it has a negative exponent.
6
Scientific Notation Example 1
Write 75,800 in scientific notation.
7
Example # 2 Write in scientific notation.
8
Standard form to Scientific notation
Places to the left (really big numbers): positive exponent Places to the right (really small numbers: negative exponent
9
~Interesting Facts~
10
Independent Practice 1) Write 2,220,000 in scientific notation. 2) Write in scientific notation. 3) Write in scientific notation.
11
What if a number is in scientific notation, and we want to put it back in standard form?
12
Just reverse the process!
13
Scientific Notation to Standard Form
To go from scientific notation to standard form: 1) Move the decimal the same number of spaces as the exponent. 2) Positive exponent: move to the RIGHT 3) Negative exponent: move to the LEFT
14
Scientific Notation to Standard Form Example 1
Write in x 𝟏𝟎 𝟑 standard form.
15
Write 6.43 x 𝟏𝟎 −𝟑 in standard form.
Example 2 Write x 𝟏𝟎 −𝟑 in standard form.
16
You Try! Write each number in standard notation. 6.17 × 10 3
6.17 × 10 3 5.4 × 10 −8 7 × 10 4
17
Which number is not written in scientific notation. Explain. [A] 6
Which number is not written in scientific notation? Explain. [A] 6.7 × 10 2 [B] × 10 −24 [C] 3 × 10 −10 [D] 13.5 × 10 4 [E] × 10 −2
18
How can we “fix a number that appears to be in scientific notation but is not?
19
Let’s fix it! So, choice d was not in scientific notation, but we can put it in scientific notation! [D] 13.5 × 10 4
20
You Try! Write each number in scientific notation
88.4 × × 10 −8
21
Practice Time! On worksheet, do problems 1 – 15 (odd)
22
So today we learned how to…
Put numbers in scientific notation Put numbers back into standard form “Fix” numbers that appear to be in scientific notation, but are not!
23
Extra practice! For 1-4 , write in scientific notation.
713, 92, For 5-7, write each number in standard form. 5) 6.7 × 10 − × 10 2 6) × 10 6
