1 There are 3 orbitals in a p subshell (ml = -1, 0, or +1).
QUESTION: How many sets of quantum numbers can an electron in a 4p subshell have? A. 2, B. 3, C. 6, D. 10 There are 3 orbitals in a p subshell (ml = -1, 0, or +1). There are 2 possible spin orientations (ms=+1/2, or –1/2) Therefore: there are 6 possibilities (3x2 = 6): (4, 1, -1, +1/2) (4, 1, -1, -1/2) (4, 1, 0, +1/2) (4, 1, 0, -1/2) (4, 1, +1, +1/2) (4, 1, +1, -1/2) SCRIPT How many sets of quantum numbers can an electron in a 4p subshell have? Two… three… five… or ten? PAUSE 2 SECONDS CLICK There are three orbitals in any p subshell. These correspond to values of –1, 0, and +1 for the magnetic quantum number em sub ell. HIGHLIGHT ml=-1,0,+1 Each electron can have two possible spin orientations --- spin up HIGHLIGHT ms=+1/2 or spin down HIGHLIGHT ms=-1/2 CLICK Therefore, there are six possible sets of quantum numbers for an electron in a 4p subshell. The correct answer is six. Here are the six possibilities. Note that specifying the subshell is the same as specifying the principal quantum number (n) and the orbital quantum number (ell). For any electron in a 4p subshell, n is equal to 4, CLICK CLICK and ell is equal to 1. CLICK CLICK The three possible values of em sub ell are –1, 0 and +1. And for each of these cases, the spin quantum number can +1/2, or –1/2. END RECORDING
