OCLC Online Computer Library Center
Origin - Ohio College Library Center – founded in 1967 by Presidents of Colleges and Universities in the State of Ohio. Mission was to develop a computerized system where Ohio’s 54 academic institutions could share resources and lower costs. Growth – In 1977, libraries outside Ohio were allowed to become members. Officially became OCLC Online Computer Library Center in Today serves more than 50,000 libraries worldwide. Mission – “…to further access to the world’s information and reduce library costs by offering services for libraries and their users.” (OCLC) Vision - …to become “the leading global library cooperative, helping libraries serve people by providing economic access to knowledge through innovation and collaboration.” (OCLC) Membership – offers a unique cooperative to: belong to the world’s largest library consortium Contribute to world’s leading bibliographic database Use OCLC services to increase productivity Share resources with other libraries Have access to the leading technology for library service and information technology
