2 Career development alifelong process of managing life, learning and work. It involves individuals planning and making decisions about education, training and career choices as well as developing the right skills and knowledge to do this along the way.

3 Where do you start?

4 STEP 1. Know who are you? • Your values – Honesty, Loyalty, Reliability • Your interests – Sports, Fashion, Food, Cars, Finance, Journalism • What are you good at? • What do you enjoy doing? • What skills do you have? • What environment do you want to work in? Indoor, Outdoor, in the one spot, travelling around, inter state or close to home • Do you want to study full time, part time or later? • What do you want to do?

5 STEP 2. Know your options Work ‐ Explore the occupations that interest you Research the industries in which you would like to work Research where the vacancies are. Further Education ‐ Explore your study options (university, TAFE or other), courses offered, entry requirements, cost of courses, etc Training ‐ Investigate Apprenticeships, Cadetships, traineeships, on‐the‐job training

6 Use Steps 1 & 2 to make your decision Make a plan
Looking at who you are and what options are available for you can help you to decide: Your next step and how to get there Implications on your life Funding - what will things cost? How can you pay for them? Short term & long term goals –be SMART when setting your goals

7 How to make a plan? Be SMART

8 Be very Specific. The more specific a goal is, the more you can find ways of reaching your target.

9 Be able to measure your progress
This will help motivate you to keep pushing forward.

10 Set goals that are achievable
Consider your commitments, workload, level of knowledge, skills, experience ...do you believe you can attain the objective you set? If not, then set a different goal, one that is attainable for you in the present

11 Set goals you have a real chance of achieving.

12 Time-bound. SMART goals need a dead line, a date for completion.
A deadline reinforces the seriousness of the goal in your mind. It motivates you to take action No timeline, there is no internal pressure to accomplish the goal, so it gets put in the back burner.
