Speed of transverse waves 𝒗 on a string are determined the tension 𝑭 in the string and its mass per unit length 𝝁 (also called linear mass density).

Increasing the tension also increases the restoring forces that tend to straighten the string when it is disturbed, thus increasing the wave speed.
