1 The Science of “PMSing”
Progesterone & Estrogen Chandana & Pranita

2 About Progesterone Secreted by the corpus luteum Steroid
Target tissue- the uterus Maintains the uterine lining built by estrogen Prepares mammary glands for secretory functions Prepares and maintains uterus for embryo if egg is fertilized In the event that the egg is fertilized, it signals the lining to stimulate the growth of blood vessels to nourish the embryo

3 Controlling Progesterone

4 Progesterone’s Role in Homeostasis
Progesterone has bone forming activity Binds to receptors on osteoblasts to signal bone forming activity Maintains lining Regulates pregnancy

5 Consequences of hyper and hypo secretion
Too little: - If pregnant, can lead to miscarriage -Irregular and heavy menustrations -anxiety -PMS Too much: - fatigue -dizziness -water retention -depression

6 Estrogen Estrone,Estradiol,Estriol Steroid Hormone
Multiple target tissues (Bones,Liver) Estrogen is required to form the ovum during oogenesis Prepares uterus for ovum Released by the ovaries, placenta, corpus luteum

7 Maintaining Homeostasis
Energy Expenditure Adipose tissue distribution Food intake Regulates body development Menstrual Cycle in women

8 Consequences of Hypo & Hyper Secretion
worsen pre-existing ovarian or breast cancers Ovulation decreases or stops all together Hypo - Obesity Mood Swings affects absorption and utilization of calcium and vitamin D (Osteoporosis) Fetal Demise (in Pregnant women) Congenital Adrenal Hypoplasia Type 2 Diabetes Heart Attacks

9 Analogy Think of Bruce Banner (the Hulk) as Progesterone and Tony Stark (Iron man) as Estrogen...

10 The partnership between the HULK & Tony Stark.
