1 Ruth Ellis Center Raffle
By: Katie Coleman and Erin Collins 8th Grade Leadership Students

2 Ground Rules for Round-Up Lesson
Be Respectful Try Your Best If any student would like to be excused from this lesson, please ask for a pass to report to the counseling office for Round-Up.

3 What is Ruth Ellis Center?
Ruth Ellis Center is an organization that provides shelter for students who need housing due to the inability to stay at home because they are LGBTQ. The AMS Leadership students have selected this as a community cause to support. The AMS Leadership class has gained donations from area partners to supply items for a student raffle. Participation in this lesson and raffle is optional. Today you will be introduced to the type of students who benefit from Ruth Ellis Center and what the Center offers for supports.

4 What Does LGBTQ Stand for?
L- Lesbian (A girl who is attracted to girls) G- Gay (When you are attracted to the same gender) B- Bisexual (Attracted to both genders) T- Transgender (You feel that you identify with a different gender) Q- Questioning (You identify as questioning if you don’t want to label yourself but you feel different from others)

5 What These Words Mean to the LGBTQ Community?
Some think the way they feel is bad or wrong and need support Many students who identifiy as LGBTQ may feel like they don’t fit in and need support at home or school

6 How Some Parents Feel Review of feedback from Ruth Ellis Center shows that: Some parents believe that the way their child feels is bad and wrong and families need support Some families are unable to find solutions together and need other support to have housing for their children Parents are looking for ways to learn to love their children no matter what.

7 Ruth Ellis Center There are four main programs:
This is where the Ruth Ellis Center comes in A non-profit organization There are four main programs: Second Stories Drop In Center Ruth Ellis Health and Wellness Center Ruth Ellis House Family Preservation Program

8 Second Stories Drop In Center
A place for LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness to go Offers critical support services Includes: Meeting space Recreational space Cyber center Kitchen, laundry, and showers

9 Health and Wellness Center
Primary Care: Check-ups Physical Vaccinations Transitioning care Behavioral Health: Individual counseling family/group counseling Substance abuse treatment

10 Ruth’s House Foster care for LGBTQ youth between ages of 12-17
Serves up to nine youth in foster care at any given time Kids live together, go to school, and help around the house

11 Family Preservation Program
Child Protective Services has identified that the family is struggling with child’s identity They work with Ruth Ellis Center if the parental mistreatment is related to child’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression The family works with Ruth Ellis Center for 13 months

13 What Can You Do To Help the Ruth Ellis Center?
Leadership is putting on a raffle to help support the Ruth Ellis Center All money raised will go to the Center Buy raffle tickets and the money will be donated Participation is Optional

14 Raffle Details Tickets sold at lunch October 30th through November 3rd
Tickets will also be sold at the Halloween dance October 26 $1 for 1 ticket $2 for 3 tickets $10 for 15 tickets

15 Prizes Grand prize is a CHROMEBOOK! Other prizes include:
Remote Control Car! Model Cars Notebook Hat and Shirt THE MORE RAFFLE TICKETS YOU BUY THE BETTER CHANCE YOU HAVE OF WINNING ONE OF THE PRIZES!!!!!!
