FOUNDATIONS OF ALGEBRAIC PROBLEM SOLVING
GED® ADULT EDUCATOR MATHEMATICAL REASONING INSTITUTE FOUNDATIONS OF ALGEBRAIC PROBLEM SOLVING TOPIC 4 REFLECTIONS OF LEARNING

Reflections of Learning
Tell the participants that they have mostly been experiencing the content just as their students might throughout most of today. Since this is the last lesson of the day, let’s spend just a few minutes reflecting on what we have learned and how we have learned it. We are going to use a process called a “Microlab” to do this.

Triad Microlabs Process Form triads (three people) Number off 1-2-3
Three rounds of questions (you will have 30 seconds to jot down thoughts before each round begins) Each person will have 1 minute to answer the question Other group members listen (if you are done before 1 minute, people should sit in silence and reflect) When time is called by the chime, the next person speaks Introduce the Microlab process using this slide and give the participants an opportunity to ask any questions they have about the process.

Microlab Questions Thinking about the work we have done in this institute thus far, as well as, the pre-institute assignment, what have you learned that you did not know before? Based on your experience as a student, what conditions must be in place for you to be successful in your learning and why? Based on your experience with working as an adult educator, what conditions must be in place for your students to be successful in their learning? Begin the process, by showing the first question on this slide. Remind them that the first 30 seconds of each round will be “time to think”, and that it should be completely quiet. After 30 seconds, instruct person #3 to begin the round and that they have 1 minute to speak. After the first minute, ring the chime and tell them “Now it is time for person #2 to speak.” After the second minute, ring the chime and tell them “and now person #1, it is your turn to speak.” When this minute is up, tell them we have now completed the first round and we will continue in the same manner for the next two rounds. Show the second question and repeat the process as above. Use a different order of which speaks first, second, and last (i.e. #2, #3, #1). Show the third question and repeat the process using again a different order for the speakers (i.e. #1, #2, #3).
