2 REVIEW Bible Principle #1?

3 REVIEW Bible Principle #1 - Context

4 REVIEW Three Types of Biblical Application

5 As it concerns Romans 9 Historical: God’s long term plan for the Nation of Israel in light of Gentile salvation.

6 As it concerns Romans 9 Doctrinal: God’s perspective of Israel in the past and his election of nations and governments to execute his sovereign plan for the world.

7 As it concerns Romans 9 Inspirational: Gain God’s perspective for Israel, so we might honor his work and pray for his outcomes.

8 Israel’s Promise Upheld
Romans 9:9-18

9 Jacob & Esau This story is of one man's obedience (Abraham), another man’s disobedience (Esau) and yet another man’s desire (Jacob)

10 Jacob & Esau Romans 9:9 For this [is] the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. 10 And not only [this]; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, [even] by our father Isaac;

11 Jacob & Esau Who has the birthright? Gen 25:24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, [there were] twins in her womb. 25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac [was] threescore years old when she bare them.

12 Esau trades his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of chili.
Jacob & Esau Esau trades his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of chili. Gen 25:29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he [was] faint: 30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red [pottage]; for I [am] faint: therefore was his name called Edom. 31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32 And Esau said, Behold, I [am] at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? 33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised [his] birthright.

13 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
Esau had the birthright but didn’t value it enough to keep it. In his desperation, he valued his own life greater than God’s Word.

14 KEY POINT Faith in God is always about man’s personal decision to submit to God’s word, even when it seems impossible.

15 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
Don’t get hung up… 11 (For [the children] being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12  It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

16 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
Esau serving Jacob is not about salvation and it isn’t about predetermination, this is God’s prophetic word given in light of his foreknowledge.

17 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
God tells Rebecca that Esau, the older, would serve the younger. Gen 25:23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations [are] in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and [the one] people shall be stronger than [the other] people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

18 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
Esau never serves Jacob – but his ancestors the Edomites do, further connection to a national context. Malachi 1:1 The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.  (2)  I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,  (3)  And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.  (4)  Whereas Edom saith…

19 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. When God declares his love for Jacob and his hatred for Esau he is differentiating between his position toward those who are within his blessing and his response to wickedness. Luke 14:26

20 Jacob, Esau and God’s Plan
God loves humanity and desires to save them… John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  (17)  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

21 What about Pharaoh? Romans 9:9-18

22 Rom 9:14 What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God?
What About Pharaoh? Rom 9:14 What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God?

23 What About Pharaoh? Rom 9:14 What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

24 What About Pharaoh? Rom 9:14 What shall we say then? [Is there] unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 16 So then [it is] not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. 17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will [have mercy], and whom he will he hardeneth.

25 What About Pharaoh?

26 What About Pharaoh? Exo 3:19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.

27 What About Pharaoh? Exo 5:2 And Pharaoh said, Who [is] the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. Exo 7:1313 And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

28 KEY POINT It is better to obey God of a free will, then be made an object lesson because of a hard heart.
