3 Background The Gilded Age:
The era was called the Gilded Age because although life in the U.S looked bright and shiny, underneath the surface, was lots of poverty and corruption. -The civil war : The war between North and South caused by argument slavery. After the victory of North, Abraham Lincoln announced emancipation of salves. -Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe united Northern feelings against slavery.

4 Authors - Walt Whitman [1819-1892]
-Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. -He was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism. -He often called the father of free verse. -His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. -He was a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War.

5 Authors - Emily Dickinson [1830-1886]
Emily Dickinson was New England woman who wrote during the Civil war era. -She lived a quiet, very private life in her little hometown. So, any mention of the war or any other great national event was not found in her poetry. -Her writings were influenced by Transcendentalist. -Her poetry is filled with images and themes

6 Authors - Mark Twain [1835-1910]
Mark Twain was raised on the river in hannibal, Missouri. There, He could hear many Indian legends and listen to the stories of the black slaves. -His work is filled with stories about how ordinary people trick experts, or how the weak succeed in “hoaxing” the strong. -In The Gilded Age, he tried to describe the new morality of post-Civil War America.
