4th Year Elective Clerkship

2 Oto/HNS Clerkship Counts towards surgical specialty requirement
3rd year Surgery rotation is a prerequisite Two clerkship choices 4 week elective 2 week elective

3 Sites UWMC, HMC, VA, Children’s: 2 or 4 wks Boise: 2 or 4 weeks
Madigan: 4 weeks Seattle area private practice (multiple sites from Everett to Puyallup): 2 weeks WWAMI (Anchorage, Spokane, Bellingham, Wenatchee): 2 or 4 weeks

4 Which clerkship to take?
4 week clerkship at “academic site” in Seattle At UWMC, HMC, VA, CHMC For students interested in applying in Oto/HNS Usually in summer (to get letters) Typically several students on rotation (UW and other med schools)

5 Which clerkship to take?
2 week clerkship at “academic sites” 2 or 4 week clerkship at non-academic sites Students not going into Oto/HNS Want to gain additional experience in: Improving HEENT exam skills Airway evaluation & management Common upper respiratory infections Technical skills: endoscopy, suturing Usually not other students (maybe 1 other at academic sites)

6 Clerkship Description
Wide exposure to a large variety of clinical & surgical experiences, rather than in depth care of a few patients (like with a Sub-I) Roughly equivalent inpatient & outpatient No mandatory call or weekends (but available) May have long days Weekly departmental didactic conference No med student conferences or exams Pager not necessary
