1 THE ARTS as MORAL CODES! Truth… whose is it?

2 GUERNICA:

3 What was Picasso doing? Giving a personal response.
Trying to show the horror of war. Moving away from “art representing life” realism. Teaching? What other works of art can you think of that might be trying to educate? Think Greek…

4 Dubya’s reaction: The painting was covered up during briefings for TV on the Iraq War. The US government felt that this painting still had the power to show how wrong war can be.

5 BUT: What about music? We generally accept the notion that music can heighten the emotions. Can music be morally wrong? Can we be influenced morally by music?

6 Some people think so: Example 1 Example 2

7 BANNED! MUSIC or LITERATURE BANNED AS EVIL…
Wagner, Shostakovitch, Rushdie, Lawrence…

8 WHY? Political interference. Perception of the artwork.
Attitude of creator to sensitive issues of race or religion.

9 SO: If art can be used as a moral educator, we must be aware of the moral code of those who wish to educate us. Art can be used in this way, but it is not the “purpose of art”. Look at the pictures you are given and find out as much as you can about them for the next lesson. You will need to present your findings and justify your belief that your particular painting should be voted: “The nation’s favourite painting”. Pp 35/6 of the text book will help and enlighten you both as you reflect on today and also as you prepare the work for next week.
