4/21/2019 9:34 AM “Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you.” "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. Weren’t The Priest & Levite Probably “Good Moral People?”
4/21/2019 9:34 AM Weren’t The Priest & Levite Probably “Good Moral People?” What are the characteristics of the “good moral person” as we usually think of him? Not murdering, not committing adultery, not lying, etc. Is the strength of our morality measured by the intensity of the negative feelings we have about immorality? Are we “good” because we have a long list of practices we are quite adamantly against? We are no better than the Pharisees – Luke 18:9-14 Our righteousness must exceed this type – Matthew 5:20 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. There is More to Being “Moral” Than Looking Down on Immorality
4/21/2019 9:34 AM There is More to Being “Moral” Than Looking Down on Immorality “Loving what is right is different from hating what is wrong and feeling right about it.” Do we confuse this revolting feeling with a true love for what is good? We do not truly qualify as being on the side of truth and goodness if all we do is criticize sin vocally. Do we love “justice?” – Matthew 25:41-46 Isaiah 1:16,17 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. God is Concerned with What We Do With What We Know to Do
4/21/2019 9:34 AM God is Concerned with What We Do With What We Know to Do We judge others by their actual performance, while we judge ourselves by our ideals Think of ourselves as “good” because we know our goals are good, capable of doing good, intend to do, etc. The person who truly loves what is right is the actual doer of good “Can do and have done don’t even live in the same neighborhood!” © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. “Knowing” and “Doing” In The Book of James
James 1:21-27 “be doers of the word, and no hearers only” “not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work” James 2:14-26 “You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only” “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” James 4:17 “to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. We Speak Carelessly When We Repeat Edmund Burke’s Statement:
4/21/2019 9:34 AM We Speak Carelessly When We Repeat Edmund Burke’s Statement: “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.” Are those really “good” who passively sit by and let evil triumph, disapproving of it all the while? © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. Talk Is Cheap! Loving good requires doing good
4/21/2019 9:34 AM Talk Is Cheap! Loving good requires doing good Are we standing “on the right side,” or simply standing “on the other side?” Obadiah 10,11 To know the Lord’s will and not to do it is to be a fool – Matthew 7:26,27 John 13:17 “blessed are you if you do them” James 1:25 “will be blessed in what he does" © 2007 Microsoft Corporation.
