1 Materials: Arrange yourself into one of the small groups.
English III Aug. 30th Materials: Arrange yourself into one of the small groups. Underneath the sheet that has your team’s color on it, you will see the issue that your team must argue. Functioning like a legal team, you will collectively fill out an outline for your argument. Pick one person in the group who will speak on your team’s behalf. Make sure that all of your team members’ names are on this outline.

2 Confer with your legal team and fill out the outline:
First, analyze your piece of evidence and jot down your opening statement. Remember that your statement will be made in front of the class but it cannot go over 1 minute. After each group has made their opening statement, each group will rotate and state your main arguments. After this, regroup with your legal team and jot down your final closing argument. This is the time to make a counter-claim to the arguments the other side made.

3 Divide yourself according to how you feel on the topic of making military service mandatory.
If you think that we should require everyone to join the military for at least a year after high school, have a seat on the right side of the room. (the side with all of the posters) If you don’t agree with this, have a seat on the left. (the side with the cabinets and book shelves) Now, jot down at least one good reason why you believe this way on a separate sheet of paper. *points for today’s grade will largely be based on participation, so if you refuse to take a side or come up with any ideas, you will not receive a passing grade.

4 Now, that you have heard what the other side has to say, get together with the others on your side and come up with a counter-claim. Tell why you might agree with the other side that _________, but they are incorrect because of ___________. For example: “I agree with the other side that military service might give someone values, but they are incorrect because it just instills a sense of obedience and fear of the government.”
