3 Chapter 16 Chapter 16: Rahim Khan tells Amir the story of how he found Hassan, and the narrative shifts so that Rahim Khan narrates in the first person. It is revealed that Hassan’s mother, Sanaubar, returned to Hassan. Hassan reacts with anger and then with forgiveness. Hassan and Farzana nurse Sanaubar back to health, and she and Hassan become close. Sanaubar who delivers Hassan’s and Farzana’s son, who is named Sohrab, after the character from Hassan’s and Amir’s favorite story when they were children. 

4 Chapter 17: revelation on the 7s
Chapter 17: The story shifts back to Amir’s perspective.  Amir also learns that Hassan and his wife were killed by the Taliban while defending the home that Amir was raised- out of loyalty to Baba Most importantly, Rahim Khan reveals that Hassan was Amir’s half-brother. Amir storms out as he is filled with disbelief that his father had lied to him all those years.

5 Chapter 17 (continued) When Amir finds out about Hassan’s parentage, he “felt like a man sliding down a deep cliff…” Hosseini uses the literary device of imagery to show what Amir is feeling inside. This revelation of Baba’s secret helps Amir to evolve and explain his father’s care for Hassan. Amir agrees to find Hassan’s son, Sohrab.

7 Chapter 19 Amir and Farid are traveling to Kabul.
Amir does not recognize Kabul. The war and bloodshed have destroyed most of what he once knew of in Kabul. While traveling, Amir learns more about his mother from a beggar on the street who used to be a university professor. His mother disclosed to her colleague, as Amir’s birth neared, “I’m so afraid, because I’m so profoundly happy, Dr. Rasul. Happiness like this is frightening. They only let you be this happy if they’re preparing to take something from you.” Hosseini uses foreshadowing, showing that she had a ‘hint’ of the tragedy in her own future.
