September 13, 2016 Global History 2/Ms. cruz Unit: Enlightenment DO NOW: (3 minutes) 1. In complete sentences, describe what the monarchy (King or Queen) is responsible for? What are their jobs/responsibilities?

2 Aim: Identify conflicts between English rulers and Parliament that were resolved during the Restoration

3 Monarchs Defy Parliament
Queen Elizabeth (Reign ) had no offspring Closest relative was cousin James Stewart (King James I) James inherited issues of Elizabeth (35,000 pounds) Worst struggle was with Parliament over money 1625, James I dies and son (Charles I) takes throne Charles needs money for wars War were with both France and Spain Parliament refused and he dissolved it 3

4 Petition of rights 1628: Parliament refuses unless Charles signs Petition of Rights (4 Points) 1. He would not imprison without due cause 2. He would not levy taxes without parliament 3. He would not house soldiers in private homes 4. He would not impose martial law in peacetime Vocabulary: Levy Taxes: Seizing money Martial Law: Law imposed by military forces.

Cromwell now held reigns of power 1649: Abolished Monarchy & House of Lords Cromwell & Puritans sought to reform society Made laws that promoted Puritan morality Abolished activities that were sinful (Theater, Sports, & Dancing) Puritan: 1. a member of a 16th and 17th century Protestant group in England and New England opposing formal customs of the Church of England 2:  a person who practices, preaches, or follows a stricter moral code than most people

7 The Restoration Cromwell ruled until 1658
Government he established collapsed New Parliament was selected Charles II Reigns Restored the monarchy Period referred to as the Restoration 7

Latin means “to have the body” Law gave every prisoner a writ or document ordering that the judge decide if the prisoner should be tried or set free Prisoners could not be held indefinitely without trials or jailed for opposing ruler 1685: Charles II Dies & James II is king

James offended subjects by displaying Catholicism Mary (James daughter) was wife of William (Prince of Netherlands) Parliament invites William & Mary to overthrow James for sakes of Protestantism 1688, William led army to London & James fled to France Overthrow of James II called Glorious Revolution Under William & Mary, England becomes a Constitutional Monarchy Laws limited the rulers power 1689, Congress drafts a bill of rights Ruler couldn’t suspend parliament laws No levying of taxes w/o grant from parliament No interfering with freedom of speech 10
