3. Historical Context of the novel
Although it was first published in 1989, Like Water for Chocolate is set during the years of the Mexican Revolution.
Which means that our novel takes place between
The Mexican Revolution was the most important modernizing force in Mexican history

Peasants and natives banded together under the leaders of figures such as Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.
These “rebels” fought to reject the old order’s dictatorship under Porfirio Diaz Mori who had been in power for over thirty years.
Diaz was known for, “bullying” and “intimidating” the citizens of Mexico. He was also known for unjust land- ownership laws that favored the wealthy and strict control of the press.

5. Laura Esquivel Was born on September 30, 1950, in Mexico City, Mexico.
Esquivel began her career as a kindergarten teacher. She later went on to write children’s television programs in the 70s and 80s.
Like Water for Chocolate was published in It has sold more than 4.5 million copies.
Esquivel continues to live in Mexico City, and has written several more books.

11. Magical Realism in Context - Where did it come from?
Magical Realism is a post-colonial form of writing. It is a reaction to how European culture was forcefully imposed on the people of central and south america.
It focuses on the aspects of Central and South American culture that was repressed. Therefore, it focuses on the folklore, myths, Indian tales, urban legends, religions etc. to tell stories of their own people.

12. Function of Magical Realism
“South America has always been fractured by wars, by conflicts, by changing frontiers, by miscegenation, by political uncertainties, by a multitude of spiritual and religious beliefs, …”
Magical realism is a way to grasp more adequately the complexity of South American oppositions while using local ways of speaking and understanding the world.
