1 Preparatory Workshop of the Pilot Boreal Natura 2000 Seminar
25/1/2012 Preparatory Workshop of the Pilot Boreal Natura 2000 Seminar The New Biogeographic Process Natura 2000 seminars Principles & Timing Helsinki, 25 January 2012

2 The New Biogeographic Process: Working together at the biogeographic level
…while the responsibility for establishing and implementing the necessary conservation targets and measures to achieve FCS lies with the individual Member States …the main objective of the new biogeogarphic process is to enhance the coherence in the management of Natura 2000 by promoting cooperation and exchange of information between Member States and all other actors involved.

3 Objectives to help achieving the 2020 and 2050 EU biodiversity target and vision to help achieving favourable conservation status (FCS) of species and habitats of Community interest and improving the status of bird species to promote the coherence of the Natura 2000 network with regard to management, monitoring, financing of and reporting on the network

4 to identify and focus on the most pressing conservation and restoration needs and agreeing on common priorities to improve information flows and exchanges on conservation measures in place across the network, the results being achieved and on possible needs for adapting targets or measures to create a feedback loop between conservation measures and conservation status at the biogeographical level

5 to recommend coordination of measures where appropriate
to recommend good practice in management/restoration and monitoring to recommending adaptation of conservation targets and measures to changing conditions, eg. including climate change to contribute to the implementation and the updating of the future prioritised action framework of measures involving Community co-financing

10 The preparatory Workshop
To prepare the ground for adopting conclusions and recommendations at the Pilot Natura 2000 Seminar To discuss key conservation issues for each group of selected habitat types NOT to discuss the background WS document

11 5 basic questions to be discussed at the WS:
1. What are the common problems in management of habitats over the biogeographical region? 2. Are there information gaps concerning these problems? 3. Are there particularly relevant examples of good practice? 4. Are there concrete possibilities for cooperation? 5. Are there any possible proposals for concrete cooperative action that could be launched at the seminar? Discussions will be in four separate working groups & in plenary session;

12 And after the Pilot Seminar?
Work involving expert networks will continue and be facilitated through the Communication Platform (to be established in 2012). The pre-scoping document will be revised based on 2013 Art 17 reporting The background document will be updated & if necessary extended A preparatory workshop will prepare the second Boreal Seminar
