We hold their belt while they splash around in the shallow water.
Then they put on the cap and gown, we walk them to the end of the pier while shaking their hand, and push ‘em off the deep end.

High School and college both have “classes” and “homework’, but the meaning of each word changes when you go to college.
Tell them to swim to one of the islands in a river.
Many have to choose a closer island with less opportunities because they don’t have the skills to make their target.
Some turn back to the pier.

Teams of 2-4 working on one project covering the entire year
Identify and validate a problem
Select and design a solution
Test and communicate their design
Final exam: Defend their work before a panel of outside experts (professors, working engineers, etc.).
Engineering is one of the most distant islands, through strong currents, during a storm.

Group work
In some marking periods, a group participation grade will be awarded for each day a student is present and contributing towards group efforts. Absences, for whatever reason, will not be counted as part of earned credit.
A large proportion of a student's grade in a marking period will be based on products produced by the group. Students will all receive the same grade for that product.

Self directed
Students must learn to be responsible for assessing and correcting their work without a lot of overview from the instructor.
Many larger assignments are due after the five week mark.
A small number of work products will make up the grade they receive.
This means is that it is possible for a student to receive a poor grade without a lot of official warning.
They need to keep track through the portal. Parents can do it too, but next year they’ll need the students’ permission first.

A minor in a specific engineering is not as good as a major.
Maturity of program matters
ABET Certification:
How much hands on work is there?
Labs or internships
Is there an alumni network or name recognition?

Not enough graduates to fill slots, growth better than general, retirements expected to increase
Starting Salaries: $45-75K
So what?
They have a good shot at getting a job, paying off their loans, and moving out of your basement.
You may not want them gone yet, but you will.
