2. What is Science? Discuss: What exactly does the word “Science” mean?

“science” – comes from a Latin word scientia that means “knowledge”
Our book defines science as the knowledge gained from the careful, systematic investigation of the natural world
Life science is the knowledge gained when scientific investigation is applied to living things

5. Limits of Science A scientist is cautious of science itself
1. Science deals only with observables
Example: it cannot accurately study origins, afterlife, or the supernatural
2. Science cannot prove universal negatives
A universal negative is a statement that excludes everything using words like “all” or “none”

6. Limits of Science 3. Science cannot make value judgments
Value judgment – is a determination of the worth of something
4. Science cannot provide final answers.
Final answer- is an answer that is absolutely true and therefore never needs to be rejected or revised
