1 The Periodic Table Naming Compounds Writing Formulas
Test Review The Periodic Table Naming Compounds Writing Formulas

2 The Periodic Table Know charges for ions from main group elements!
Alkali metals (Group 1)  1+ ions Alkaline earth metals (Group 2)  2+ ions Boron group (Group 3)  3+ ions Carbon group (Group 4)  4- ions Nitrogen group (Group 5)  3- ions Oxygen group (Group 6)  2- ions Halogens (Group 7)  1- ions Noble gases (Group 8)  Do not form ions

3 The Periodic Table Know how ions are formed.
Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions. Nonmetal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. Know difference between cations and anions.

4 Naming Compounds If ionic (contains a metal or ammonium)…
Just name the ions Remember that some metal ions require Roman numerals Copper (I) or Copper (II) Iron (II) or Iron (III) Tin (II) or Tin (IV) Lead (II) or Lead (IV)

5 Writing Formulas If ionic (contains a metal or ammonium)…
Determine the charge of each ion Look at the periodic table Look at the Roman numeral Use known charge of the polyatomic ion Combine the ions in the lowest ratio that forms a neutral compound.
