Figure 1 Glia Control Neuronal Receptive Ending Shapes and Associated Animal Behaviors by a Potassium/Chloride Co-transporter (A) In wild-type animals, AMsh glia express K/Cl co-transporters that pump chloride ions into the microdomain where AFD sensory neuron NREs are embedded. Cl- binds to a conserved motif in the extracellular domain (ECD) of GCY-8, which in turn inhibits the cyclase activity of GCY-8. Partially through the actin regulator WSP-1, low cGMP levels ensure proper microvilli morphologies and normal thermotaxic behaviors. (B) In the absence of KCC-3 channels or in the presence of a gain-of-function mutation in the kinase-homology domain (KHD) of GCY-8 (gcy-8 ns335), cGMP levels are elevated, which causes perturbed NRE shapes and defective behaviors.
