2 Background The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, met at Stockholm from 5 to 16 June 1972, and considered the need for a common outlook and for common principles to inspire and guide the peoples of the world in the preservation and enhancement of the human environment. It was the first document in international environmental law to recognize the right to a healthy environment

3 What it did The meeting agreed upon a Declaration containing 26 principles concerning the environment and development; an Action Plan with 109 recommendations, and a Resolution The 26 principles were put in place to stop the destruction of all resources and control the pollution in the air and water
