5 I. Lyndon Johnson’s Legacy:
1) on a Crusade against Poverty Knew that a rich powerful government should try to help the 50 million in extreme poverty Wanted to continue JFK’s aim to solve America’s inequality problems --> 2) How did he want to fight? Created 60 programs between Here are the most important ones:

6 II. Johnson’s Programs:
Called “THE GREAT SOCIETY” but think of it as the New Deal Part 3… A) Education Act - $Millions of dollars for public schools B) Higher Education Act - Scholarships & Work-study programs for low-income college students (this is called Affirmative Action). C) Project Head Start - National pre-schools (4 years+) D) Dept. of Urban Development - improves housing, transportation, health care in urban cities. E) Water Quality & Clean Air act - make society cleaner F) Fair packaging/Labeling - so we know what we are eating

9 III. MOST IMPORTANT: 1) Medicare - Health Insurance, primarily for the elderly. Old & Sick = your health care is covered Helps pay for doctor visits and medicine prescriptions 2) Medicaid - is health insurance for low income families. You have to have a set level of income for the entire family -This welfare program exists because children do not have a choice to be rich or poor, its a system for the kids.

Improved many lives Proved that the government can help the disadvantaged Supreme Court Showed its muscle!! Paved the way for the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT!!! (next class)
