What is PBC? Partners being collaborative
Partnering because of children Practice based coaching All of the above If you guessed “D”- All of the above – you’re right!
3
What is practice based coaching?
PBC occurs within the context of a collaborative partnership. Each component in the cycle is designed to inform the actions taken by a coach or teacher during the subsequent component (or throughout the coaching process). The cyclical nature of PBC emphasizes that expectations and desired outcomes of coaching are regularly reviewed and updated. In a nutshell, PBC occurs between coaches and coachees. It is a research based approach to professional development and consists of goals and action steps.
4
The following figure shows the PBC cycle and illustrates the relationships among the components.
5
What is practice based coaching?
Practice based coaching is a cyclical process for supporting teacher’s use of effective teaching practices that lead to positive outcomes for children. The coaching cycle components are: Planning goals and action steps Engaging in focused observation Reflecting on and sharing feedback about teaching practices
6
What is the point of PBC? PBC helps us to unite towards a common goal and translate goals into action! PBC helps keep the focus on goals and actually implementing them. Consider the impact if everyone was working together on just one of our program goals- school readiness: WCAP Early Childhood program will enhance mental health and social emotional services for children, staff, and families in order to maximize the potential of enrolled children to enter Kindergarten with a solid foundation for successful learning.

GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!

Why PBC? What we know about current professional development practices: Current methods are not effective Theory < implementation Focused teaching practices are much more effective than traditional methods of training The “practice” piece is the place where the magic happens! Coaching will allow for targeted professional development for staff, and is a great opportunity for you to learn and grow in your profession!

Components at a glance Shared goals and action planning
Focused observations Reflecting on and sharing feedback about teaching practices Assess needs Set goals for coaching Create an action plan to guide coaching Review and update goals and action plan throughout coaching partnership Gather info through observation Record info about the observation Use support strategies to learn more about the practice or to improve or refine teaching practices (coach models and prompts) Discuss and reflect on observation and progress Share and consider feedback Use support strategies to learn more about the practice or to improve or refine teaching practices (problem solving conversations, creating materials, etc)

Technical assistance impacts use in the field
Professional development elements/training component Knowledge level Skill attainment Transfer to practice/use in the classroom Theory/discussion- (presenter explains content- what, why, and how to teach it) 10% 5% 0% Demonstration- (presenter models instructional practices) 30% 20% Practice & Feedback- (participants implement instructional practices during the session) 60% Coaching in the classroom- (participants receive ongoing support and guidance when they return to the classroom) 95% 99%
15
Technical assistance is one form of professional development!
On a continuum of learning, it is the “actual use in the field support” Gaining information and knowledge Developing skills Using knowledge and skills in practice (TA) Practice based coaching falls here!
16
Bottom line/next steps
Practice based coaching allows for practice without penalty! PBC also ensures that there are no random acts of improvement Today staff will complete the Teaching Practices Strengths and Needs Assessment. The results of these assessments will help us in our planning as we begin the development of coaching partnerships.
17
But wait, there’s more As part of WCAP’s commitment to training and professional development, we will have another opportunity for coaching with Kim Jackson this fall. This will be a slightly different model than PBC, but will still focus on teachers who want to grow their skills and their own leadership abilities. More info will be forthcoming on this, and we hope that staff will see these coaching programs as opportunities for growth!
