Christine AND Phantom - main characters Christine - weak, innocent, naive in love with Raoul from beginning asks Raoul to protect her from phantom pities the phantom, does not love him secretly engaged to Raoul, not phantom Phantom - outcast from society, but not a psychopath loves Christine and would not hurt her sets her free to go with Raoul capable of remorse in the end only part of his face is deformed audience is meant to feel sympathy for him Raoul - loving, kind, protective, childhood crush follows Christine because she asked him to protect her Madame Giry - brought the phantom to the opera house as a child helps keep his identity a secret him until he kills someone, then tells Raoul where to find him. Tells Phantom she sings for him at beginning Protects after Raoul he hears them talking and tries to kill the phantom out of jealousy Goes back to underground lair multiple times Haunted by “Angel of Music” and scared of him Plans to stay with Phantom until Raoul forces her to tell him whose ring she is wearing Phantom (Erik) - cruel, murderer, tortures people Helped build the opera house, knows all the secret passages and trap doors Thinks Christine is his possession and will kill her if she leaves him So ugly/deformed he looks “like a corpse” Raoul - obsessed, overprotective childhood friend Madame Giry - does not protect the Phantom, did not help him escape to hide in the opera house.
