A study of one revolutionary leader, study of the changes sought and brought about by the actions of the leader. How the French Revolution influenced events in Ireland Consequences of the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland.

2 Main causes Unfair political system. The Protestant Ascendency refused to share power. Influence of the ideas from the American and French Revolution: equality, liberty, setting up a republic. Activities of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishmen. French supported Irish to have a revolution in Ireland. The brutal response of the British to the United Irishmen.

3 Henry Grattan Campaigned for greater freedom for the Irish Parliament. Had Poyning’s Law abolished. A law stating that the king and his advisors in London must approve any law before it was passed in Dublin.

Soon after the United Irishmen were banned, the members began to believe that their aims could only be achieved through violence Wanted an independent Ireland and wanted a republic. Large numbers of Irish Catholics joined. He was Influenced by French Revolution.

15 Wolfe Tone in France Tried to get French support.
French listened as they were enemies with Britain. Sent a feet of 43 ships, 43,000 soldiers to Ireland. Leader of ships was General Lazare Hoche Never arrived in Ireland. Hoche’s fleet got separated from others. when the others arrived, they could not land in Bantry, Cork as a result of a storm.
