4 Slavery in the colonies
Europeans began the slave trade long before the English colonies were founded, and in the 1400s, Portuguese explorers set up trading posts in Africa. African traders stole and kidnapped people from their houses and took them to posts. Europeans began bringing enslaved Africans to the Caribbean and south America to work on sugar plantations. In 1619 the first Africans arrived in Jamestown, where Africans were sold into slavery, and throughout the colonies.

5 Slavery in the colonies
By law, salves were property no people. Demand for enslaved Africans increased in the colonies as plantations grew larger. Mid 1700s tens of thousands of enslaved Africans were brought to the colonies each year.

By the mid 1700s the British had took over 13 colonies along the eastern coast of north America. People began to have new ideas about government. During this period, known as the Enlightenment .

A British thinker john Locke wrote that government should protect the rights of their people. In 1748 a French thinker wrote that government should allow for citizens’ freedoms. These essays made people in America want more rights. In 1765 the British government passed the stamp act, it put tax on anything printed on paper, including newspapers

The colonies wanted to be able to passing laws that affected them Britain put more taxes, then the colonies protested these taxes Britain sent soldiers to America to control the protests

The British soldiers broke down a fight in one evening in 1770, where they shot down and killed 5 colonies This event became known as the Boston massacre, it helped the colonies become together

In 1773 the colonies planed a large protest on tea after the British put it tax on it. They dumped tea from British ships into the Boston harbor After that The Boston tea party made the British government rage, which made them pass laws that gave them even more control over the colonies.
