TAG QUESTIONS

Question tags… These are short additions to the sentences, asking for agreement or confirmation.

Possitive senences… Normally we use a negative question tag after a positive sentence. Positive sentence negative tag E.g Marry will be here soon, won’t she? There was lot of traffic, wasn’t there? Jim should pass the exam, shouldn’t he?

Negative sentences… We use a positive question tag after a negative sentence. Negative sentence + positive tag E.g Mary won’t be late, will she? They don’t like us, do they? You haven’t got a car, have you?

After Let’s… After Let’s the question tag is … shall we?
E.G Let’s go for a walk, shall we? Let’s have a cup of tea, shall we? Let’s watch TV, shall we?

Imperatives After the imperative (Do…/Don’t do…etc.), the tag is usually …will you? E.g Open the door, will you? Don’t smoke here, will you? Come early, will you? Don’t stay up late, will you?

I… After positive sentences with the subject I, we use aren’t I?
E.g I’m your friend, aren’t I? I’m three years old, aren’t I? I’m good at English, aren’t I?

NOTE! Statements containing words such as neither, no (adjective), none, no one, nobody, nothing, scarcely, barely, hardly, hardly ever, seldom are treated as negative statements and followed by a positive question tag. E.g No salt is allowed, is it? Nothing was said, was it? Peter hardly ever goes to parties, does he? She has no money, does she?

NOTE! When the subject of the sentence is anyone, anybody, no one, nobody, none, neither, everyone, everybody, somebody, someone we use the pronoun they as the subject of the tag? E.g I don’t suppose anyone will volunteer, will they? No one would object, would they? Neither of them complained , did they? Everyone warned you, didn’t they?
