3 Your Physical Health Eating balanced meals
Engaging in physical activity Getting 8 hours of sleep every night Maintaining good hygiene Avoiding alcohol, drugs and tobacco

4 Your Emotional health Express your emotions in healthy ways
Deal with sadness and ask for help if they need too Accept both their strengths and weaknesses

5 Your mental health The ability to handle stress effectively and to solve problems Openness to new ideas and new ways of doing things The ability to adjust to change

6 Your social health Are you considerate of other people?
Do you show respect to other people? Are you dependable? Do you support your friends when they make good choices? Do you share your feelings with your friends?

7 What is wellness? Stay physically healthy by taking care of your body
Stay mentally healthy by dealing with stress appropriately Stay emotionally healthy by expressing your feelings in a healthy way Stay socially healthy by being considerate of others.

8 Life Skills activity You are at a party with several of your friends. Everyone is having a great time until two of your classmates get into an argument. It seems that a fight might even start. Role-play this situation with a group of classmates. Discuss what you and your friends could do to prevent the argument from becoming a fight.

9 Wellness quiz, page 7 On a separate sheet of paper, write “true” or “false” for each of the following statements to check your overall health. Then, use the scale below to obtain your score Physical Emotional/Mental Social I eat a well balanced meal I do well in most of my subjects at school I have at least 1 good friend I rarely eat junk food I tell other how I feel I can say no to others I sleep 8 hrs every night I can talk about problems I can get along with different people I avoid risky behavior I am a responsible person I keep my promises to friends I brush and floss my teeth daily My family is important to me I enjoy doing things with my family I am physically active at least 3 days a week I am not afraid to be alone My friends trust me I enjoy doing different activities I can communicate with others Give yourself 1 point for every questions you answered “true.” A score of 6 or 7 in any area indicates excellent health in that area. If you scored below a 4 in an area, you probably need to improve that part in your overall health.

10 Health Journal – Do now Write in your health journal about a time in which your family helped you deal with being sad or angry. What, in particular, did they do that helped you the most?

Explain how these two parts of health differ. You have lost interest in activities that you once enjoyed. What part or parts of your health are out of balance? Explain your answer

13 Who are you? Traits passed on from parent to offspring help to determine your physical features. Family members often resemble each other because physical traits are passed from generation to generation. You have characteristics or traits, that you inherited from your parents. Even some diseases, such as sickle cell anemia, are inherited. This causes red blood cells to become shaped in such a way that small blood clots form and cause pain. Some diseases, such as diabetes, are affected by heredity and other factors such as diet.

14 What is around you? Your environment can also affect your health.
Air pollution can trigger asthma, which is a lung disease. Second hand smoke is another form of air pollution that can be hard to avoid. Your environment can also affect other parts of your health. Ex: noise pollution can make it hard to concentrate and thus affects your mental health.

15 Think about this ?? What is heredity? Define environment.
Explain how heredity can affect your health. What are three things in your environment that can affect your health? Can you control any of these things? Explain your answer. Which do you think has a larger role in influencing your health: heredity or environment? Explain your reasons?

16 Lets compare Compare inherited traits with each other…..
How many students can roll their tongue? How many students have earlobes that are unattached, or hanging down, or if their earlobes are attached?

The choices you make reflect your lifestyle A having lifestyle begins with having a good attitude A good attitude allows you to make choices that are good for you and your health Describe three healthy choices that you made in the last 24 hours … Write them down and lets discuss!

20 Controlling your health & Being Responsible
Everyone has things that they are responsible for, and as you get older you will be expected to have more. Taking care of yourself involves practicing preventative healthcare : going to the Dr for regular exams is preventative healthcare. You have the ability to control much of your health Ex: If you are feeling tired, try and get some extra sleep Remember that all four parts of you health are equally important for overall wellness. What are the four parts?

21 Health Journal Think of a personal decision that you made this year that is an example of acting responsibly. Write your decision in your journal and explain why you made that decision.

22 Lets review What is a healthy attitude?
Define the term lifestyle in your own words. Explain why preventative healthcare is important and give three examples of it. What are two things you can do to take control of your health? What is the relationship between attitude and lifestyle? How do attitude and lifestyle affect your health?

Communicating effectively is one of the life skills that will help you now and throughout your life! As you get older you will have to deal with many new situations and life skills can help you in these situations. 25 Using life skills When you start using a new skill, you may feel uncomfortable at first.. PRACTICE ! Life skills can you do the following: Make a decision or set a goal Say no to someone Express your feelings to other people Practice good health habits Cope with problems and emotions Become a better consumer Think of a problem that you have in school that could be solved by using one of the life skills. Which life skill would you use, and how would this skill help solve your problem?

26 Life skills and staying healthy
The life skills you are learning now will help you asses and improve all of the areas of your health. When the areas of your health are balanced, you will feel good physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. At your tables discuss the following: List nine life skills and below each life skill, take turns describing a situation in which you would use that particular skill. Discuss the scenario with each other and comment… Maybe plan a skit to present to the class 

27 Lets Review What is a life skill?
Explain why the life skills are important to learn and use. Describe how you can check your progress in learning life skills. Explain how practicing a life skill with a friend can help you when you face a real problem. Your friends became upset that you chose not to go to the game Friday night. What life skill could help you say no? explain your answer. Your family is moving to another state. You are upset because you have gone to the same school since the first grade and you will miss your friends. Which life skill would help you and how would you apply it?
