It referred to the fact that a growing number of Americans began doubting the truthfulness of Johnson and the federal office.

Ending and after the war
Johnson faced harsh criticism during this time. The number of Americans that no longer trusted him continually grew. He halted the bomb droppings and called for peace negotiations. Johnson didn’t run for re-election; many people were shocked by his decision. Middle-class students in Europe and many nations in Latin America and Asia criticized the authority of established authorities and demanded a bigger role in shaping the educational institutions.

Young Americans were also rebelling against the traditional practices of the so-called establishment. Though not all of those who were identified with this movement were political activists, most fiercely defended their right to bring about fundamental changes in America social attitudes and customs. Music, fashion, and drugs became young Americans main cultural opposition. Given the prominent role rock'n'role had played in shaping youth culture in the 1950s.
