2
Pg. 450 The First Line of Defense Eyes Skin Stomach Mucous Membranes/Saliva
3
Immune System A combination of body defenses made up of cells, tissues, and organs that fight off pathogens and disease Immunity Your body’s ability to resist the germs that cause a particular disease
4
Targets pathogen in a more specialized manner
Nonspecific Response Specific Response Inflammation or increased blood flow to the infected area Specific white blood cells go to area and destroy pathogen If spreads- causes fever which can slow pathogen Triggers more WBC Targets pathogen in a more specialized manner Gives body ability to recognize same pathogen if it invades again Vaccinations
5
Antigens- substances released by invading pathogens
Lymphatic System A secondary circulatory system that helps the body fight pathogens and and maintains the fluid balance Lymph and lymphocytes B cells T cells Antigens- substances released by invading pathogens Antibodies-proteins released by B cells that attach to antigens , keeping them from harming the body Antibodies are specific to each antigen and remain in blood in case of another infection
6
Immunity Natural immunity is present at birth Acquired Immunity
Antibodies pass from mom to baby Breast feeding Active immunity- antibodies you make Vaccine A preparation of dead or weakened pathogens that is injected into the body to cause the immune system to produce antibodies
